WebScience Studio is a web design and development agency (currently under development) focused on empowering small business owners in my local community with a user-friendly and impactful online presence. This case study explores the initial design phase, where I developed a website concept based on research and empathy for the target audience.
Understanding Small Business Needs
Webscience Studio was born from my own pain points as a customer trying to interact online with businesses in my community. I found that if they do have a website, it suffered from lacking clear information and a poor user-experience. I wondered what barriers these and other business owners felt when trying to get their business online.
Through research and a few discussions with business leaders in my community, I identified several key challenges:
- Limited Tech Knowledge: Many small business owners may not have extensive experience with website creation and could feel overwhelmed by the process.
- Unclear Communication: Technical jargon used by web designers can alienate potential clients.
- Focus on Features, Not Benefits: Websites often prioritize listing features over explaining how those features benefit the customer.
- Cost Prohibitive Professional Services: Many felt that the high intro prices of professional web development were out of reach.
Designing a User-Centered Solution
Based on this research, I wanted to “practice what I preach” by ensuring Webscience Studio’s website is a demonstration of clear communication and best practices. I developed a website concept for that prioritizes user experience:

Visual Identity:
A retro-inspired color scheme and iconography, developed in Adobe Illustrator, conveys both technical knowledge and a sense of approachability, putting local business owners at ease.

Homepage Design:
The homepage features clear messaging that focuses on the benefits WebScience Studio offers to small businesses, not just the technical aspects of website creation. The design is intuitive and easy to navigate for users of all tech backgrounds.

A Website Built on Empathy
While the website is still under development, the initial design decisions demonstrate the user-centered approach that will be central to WebScience Studio. By focusing on clear communication, approachability, and highlighting the value proposition for small businesses, the website aims to become a valuable resource for business owners in my community.

Looking to the Future
The development of WebScience Studio is ongoing. The user-friendly homepage will be a springboard for the creation of clear service pages, a streamlined contact section, and engaging content designed to convert visitors into clients.
